Alice E. (Schroeder) Kimme

1929 - 2021

Howards Grove

Alice E. Kimme, 92, of Howards Grove, passed away on April 2, 2021, at the home of her daughter, Virginia Kimme, surrounded by her family.

Alice was born on January 2, 1929 in the town of Greenbush, WI, the third daughter of August and Leona (Rautmann) Schroeder. Alice attended Spring Valley Grade School, town of Greenbush, and graduated from Glenbeulah High School. After high school, Alice worked at Borden’s in Plymouth, WI, until marriage. She met the love of her life at the Dreamland Dance Hall. Eugene Kimme was home on leave from the service, stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

After Eugene’s discharge, they were married at the Methodist Church in Greenbush and started farming on the farm of John and Ida Giese near Random Lake, WI. Five years later they bought the farm on Garton Road from Milford and Irene Henning which is farmed today by their son, Ronald. Eugene retired from farming in 1989. Alice worked side by side with her husband all their farming years. She was her husbands right hand helper. She spent many hours in the fields – springtime planting, until the last crop was harvested, and plowing the land.

Alice had a gentle touch, soft voice, and caring heart. With her help, many farm animals that were sick recovered. Her great love for animals will be missed. Her husband, Eugene, preceded her in death on October 25, 2008. Alice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 387 and the Johnsonville Homemakers.

Alice is survived by her four children, Laura (Roger) Benzschawel, Floyd (Johanna) Kimme, Virgina Kimme, and Ronald Kimme; grandsons, Justin (Amber) Kimme and Clayton Kimme (Special friend, Kelly Lazaro); great-granddaughter, Harper Kimme; sisters, Dorothy Levsen and Betty Kracht. She is also survived by her husband’s brothers and sisters, Edward (Melba) Voss, Elroy (Marilyn) Voss, Marcella Nohl, Bertha (Richard) Hebing, Lorraine Schnell, Linda Reichert, Judy (James) Matson.

Alice is preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene; sisters, Marion Case and Lucille (Willard) Matzdorff; brothers-in-law, Anthony Levsen and Lester Kracht; her husband’s brothers and sisters, Gerald (Grace) Voss, Corabell (Emil) Perrone, Roland Nohl, Vernetta (Harold) Grunwald, Evelyn (Elgert) Toedter, Lucille (Jan) Mehre, Harvey Schnell, and Clarence Reichert.

The family would like to send special thanks to Tom Rieth for his care and compassion shown to our mother. He was like a son to her.

To the Sharon Richardson Community Hospice – thank you all for your loving care and support to our mother. Also, thank you to all the relatives and friends that took a few minutes to visit or call our mother.

Per Alice’s wishes, the family will be having a private memorial service. She will later be buried at Siemers-Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Alice’s name.

This poem is dedicated to all farm wives, fiancées, girlfriends – to all farm women.

On the 8th Day
God looked down on his planned paradise
Something was missing
Someone to get up before the dawn while her husband fetched the cows, to set up the dairy and feed the dogs
Someone to work until day break with her husband milking the cows
Someone to feed, bath and get to school the 4 children
Someone to work all day side by side with her husband in the fields
Someone to make sure the children did their chores and homework before being allowed to spend time doing what dad does
Someone to cook the family dinner and do the housework
Someone to do the 10pm and midnight checks on the calving cows
Someone to never complain and relish in the life that she has chosen to live
Someone that replies with smiling eyes, when her daughter says that she wants to do what mum does.

So God Made A Farmer’s Wife

We are very sorry for your loss!  Uncle Eugene and Aunt Alice were always so welcoming!  They offered their cabin to us for our honeymoon before we had to move to South Dakota.  They will always hold a special place in our hearts.

I have good memories of Aunt Alice taking my hand when I was very little and we’d walk into the barn by the cows and she would always let me pet the friendly ones. ❤️. Gail Voss.
