Reuben Hoppe

November 12, 1922 — January 12, 2018

Reuben R. Hoppe of Howards Grove, passed away Friday, January 12, 2018 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls after a brief illness. He was 95 years old.
Reuben was born November 12, 1922 in the Town of Meeme to Henry and Jennie (nee Schreiber) Hoppe. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Church in the Town of Herman. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1940. Later, he worked for his uncle Roland Schreiber in his cheese factory, and farmed his own land until 1947. In 1947, he married Arline Sprenger at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he became a active and dedicated member, and remained one for the next 70 years. There, he served as Church President, was the financial secretary, and sang God's praises in the church choir for over 50 years.
Reuben was employed at Millersville Box Co. from 1947-1959, then for Walter Schneider Construction. He rejoined the Millersville Box Co. in 1967 as a foreman in the Lumber Department, retiring in 1988. He served on the company's Board of Directors, and was the President from 2007-2012, when the company was sold.
Reuben belonged to the Millersville Fire Department where he served as secretary. He was currently an honorary member of Howards Grove Fire Department. He served the community on the District #1 School Board and became an advisory member to the Howards Grove Schools. When Howards Grove became a village, he became the first village clerk and served as secretary of Sheboygan County League of Municipalities.
Reuben enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, playing skat, sheepshead and progressive rummy, and working in his garden, raising vegetables which he shared with many friends. His memory lives on with the many friends and family members who he gifted with his special woodworking projects.
Reuben is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arline and their children: David (Amy) Hoppe of Sheboygan and Sandra (Edward) Strauss of Sheboygan Falls. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Dean (Kris) Strauss, Sara (Rick) Knoflicek and Darin (Tanya) Strauss; great-grandchildren: Bryce, Evan and Brianna; step-great-grandchildren: Carly, Amanda, Ava, Sam, Cody and Chase, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
