Joseph Moore

Joseph (Joe) R. Moore, 81, a town of Mosel resident, passed away at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice on Friday, January 12, 2018 with family at his side. Joe was born on May 30, 1936 in Marfa, Texas, to J.C. and Laura Helen (Russell) Moore. He completed elementary school in Marfa, Texas and graduated from Hobbs High School (New Mexico) in 1954. Joe earned a BS degree in Mathematics (Eastern New Mexico University) in 1958, a Masters in Science Education (University of New Mexico) in 1965 and a Specialist degree (Western Illinois University) in 1975. He taught mathematics and biology at Las Vegas High School. In 1968 he moved to Iowa to begin a career as an educational consultant in the Iowa Area Educational Agencies.
In 1990 Joe became the Director of Curriculum for the Howards Grove School District. He joined the Chilton School District as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in 1994. After 42 years in education, Joe retired. A lifetime member of the National Education Association, a fellow of the Iowa Academy of Science, and a long-time director of the Iowa Junior Academy of Science, he was also a peer trainer for the American Meteorological Society from 1994 to 2010. Joe was active in community service via the Boy Scouts and Explorer Scout programs, 4H programs, the Sheboygan County Historical Museum, and was a Mead Public Library volunteer in Sheboygan. While in Iowa, he served two terms as mayor of Luana and was a board member and officer of the National Science Supervisors Association. As an educator, he was the recipient of numerous grants and awards. After retiring from Chilton Schools, he was a messenger for the Bemis Manufacturing Company of Sheboygan Falls for 10 years, and then returned to his passion of hobby farming.
Joe married Karen E. Malmstrom in 1961 and they later divorced. Their children are Joseph Michael Moore (Jaci), Carl Russell Moore, and Gary Lee Moore (Jody Bell). He married Jamie Ann Thomas in 1977. Their children are Benjamin James-Thomas Moore and Jerome Christopher (JC), Thomas-Moore (Jackie). He is also survived by his brother Van E. Moore (Ann) and sister Helen A. Elliot; grandchildren Nick (Courtney Brown), Michelle, Hannah and Jacob; numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents and his brother John Moore.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 3:00 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 8100 Brunner Rd, Newton, with Fr. Dave Beaudrey officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Monday, January 15, 2018 from 2:00 pm until the time of Mass at the CHURCH.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sheboygan County Historical Society, Arbor Day Foundation, or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Joe's name.
