David Eugene Berglund, age 86, passed away on September 23, 2024 at Aurora Medical Center in Sheboygan. He was born on July 10, 1938 in Webster, South Dakota to the late Elmer and Myrtle (Rood) Berglund. Following his high school graduation in Roslyn, he earned his bachelor's degree in business at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. On April 13, 1963, he married the love of his life Karen Hubbard.
Dave started his career with Chevrolet in Minneapolis and was soon transferred to the Green Bay office for what was meant to be a ‘few years’. They decided to make their temporary home Sheboygan, since it was central to his district with Chevrolet. But, Chevrolet changed their plans and Sheboygan became their home where they raised their three daughters and have lived for nearly 60 years.
Dave became very active at St. Peter Lutheran Church, where they fostered a wonderful support system of friends and ‘extended family’ through the years.
He worked for Chevrolet for 25 years and kept his love of Chevy vehicles his entire life. When Chevrolet changed their sales model in 1984, they gave Dave the option to either pack up and move his family across the state or retire. Rather than uprooting his family, he chose to leave Chevrolet to stay in the city they called home. Dave then started his second career with Primerica Financial Services (formerly A.L. Williams), which he was still involved with at the time of his death.
Dave was all about people. Whether you worked with him, were a part of his church family, or just met him on the street. Everyone he met was an instant friend (especially if he found out there was a South Dakota or Chevrolet connection). His kids, grandkids and great grandkids were his life. They always called him “Grandpa Duck” for his ability to make them laugh with his Donald Duck impressions. He attended as many sporting events as possible and was always so proud their accomplishments. He bragged about them every chance he got to anyone who would listen! He had many ‘adopted grandkids,’ especially from church, as well.
Sports were his passion. Playing on teams in high school with his twin brother, Duane; and watching anything and everything that was on TV. If there were multiple games on TV at the same time, he frequently played ‘sports roulette’ by constantly switching between channels so he didn’t miss a single highlight. He will be especially missed during Packer and Wisconsin Badgers games - always texting family members during the games, and talking with some of his favorite people afterwards to dissect the game. He was also an avid golfer for most of his life, and loved playing at Sunset Hills Golf Course in Sheboygan Falls.
Dave’s other love was having lefse at all holiday gatherings. His Norwegian/Swedish heritage was a major part of his life and if there was one thing that stood out most from that, it was lefse. His wife, Karen, made sure it was at every holiday gathering and you had better be quick to get some before Dave got to it!
Dave is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughters Amy (Ed) Kirchenwitz, Laurie (Mark) Orsted, Julie (Judy Harshman) Berglund; his grandchildren Becky (Nick) Barritt, Andrea (Austin) DeFrance, Ellis (Desiree) Kirchenwitz and Caitlyn Hills; great grandchildren Logan, Landon, Jasper, Cooper, Adalynn and Jack; his sisters-in-law Eileen Berglund and Kathy Hubbard; brother-in-law Kay Cutler; and many cousins, other relatives and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Duane, his father and mother-in-law Ronald and Margaret Hubbard, sister-in-law Theone Cutler, brother-in-law Terrance Hubbard, granddaughter, Jeni (Jae) Hills, and many other relatives and close friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Aurora Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care of our dad/husband. We appreciate the attention and kindness you all extended not only to our dad/husband but to our whole family during such a difficult time.
