Bernetta M. Brendel, 92, of Sheboygan, died on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Terrace Place in Sheboygan. Bernetta was born on Christmas Eve 1923 in the Town of Herman to Clarence and Orela (Wuestenhagen) Illig. On October 2, 1943 she was united in marriage to Harold August Brendel at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Howards Grove. Harold preceded her in death on February 25, 1994.
A talented seamstress, she worked at Wigwam Mills for 28 years. Bernetta had a strong faith and was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Howards Grove and served on the Alter Guild for many years. Dancing was a favorite pastime for her, she loved to Polka, and one of her favorites was the Beer Barrel Polka. She also had an adventurous side and enjoyed traveling. Bernetta and her sister Margie, affectionately known as the "Munchkins", took many bus tours after the passing of her husband. In later years when the bus tours were harder to do, she traveled locally with Cindy Nelson and Mary Burtard, and the rest of the "Jingle Bell Girls". She also loved to crochet and made afghans for all her grandchildren. Family was very important to her and she loved creating memories, and spending time with them.
She is survived by three sons: Charles (Patricia) Brendel, Jerome Brendel, and Vernon (Linda) Brendel, by five grandchildren; Nathan (Briana) Brendel, Stephanie (Chase) Nelson, Annette Brendel, Jeff Brendel, and Scott (Jenny) Brendel, eight great-grandchildren, her sisters Margaret Erdman and Jeanette Wreidt, sister in-law Lorraine Brendel, also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brother Ernst Illig, and several brother and sister-in-laws.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Zimmer-Westview Funeral & Cremation Care Center W2132 Garton Rd., Sheboygan, with Rev. Tim Kuske officiating. Inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on August 19, 2016 from 11:00AM to the time of service at the FUNERAL HOME.
The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. Vytas Kerpe, MD and his staff, especially Carrie, at the Sheboygan Internal Medicine Associates for the loving care that they provided for Bernetta over the past 3 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Alter Guild.
