Visitation and Funeral Service for Rev. Dean Roy Miller Time: 1:00pm - 7:00pm Central Location:
St Johns UCC Sheboygan
The Rev. Dean Roy Miller, 83, of Kingfisher, Okla., and former long-time Sheboygan County resident, a man with a passion for the gospel, love for people and a tireless champion for the underdog, died Sunday, July 13, 2008 at his home. He was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Cheney, Kan., west of Wichita, to Roy and Carrie Brown Miller. He attended a rural school and graduated from Cheney High School, Mission House College (now Lakeland College) in Plymouth, Wisc., and United Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., where he began a lifelong study of biblical Greek and Hebrew.
Though small in stature, Dean Roy stood tall as an advocate for others, particularly those in the hospital, as befitting his training as a medic with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the United Church of Christ. During a 53-year-long career in ministry, he was pastor to churches in Marshall, Okla.; Junction City, Whitewater and Smith Center, Kan.; Plum Hill and Edwardsville, Ill.; Blackburn, Mo.; southwestern North Dakota; and rural Elkhart Lake, Campbellsport and Sheboygan, Wisc. He was a church camp leader and visiting minister for the UCC's Kansas-Oklahoma Conference.
He was blessed to be a blessing to others; rarely did he receive the Lord's Supper or end face-to-face or telephone conversations without wishing the Lord's blessings upon the listener. In his life, he personified a ministers' charge to congregations:
Go out into the world in peace;
Have courage;
Hold on to what is good;
Return no one evil for evil;
Strengthen the fainthearted;
Support the weak, and help the suffering;
Honor all people;
Love and serve the Lord,
Rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit
He was a member of the Lions and Kiwanis clubs and the Franklin American Legion. He also volunteered with Red Cross disaster teams. He was active in the UCC's Men's Brotherhood and sang in the choirs of most of the churches he served.
His first wife, Mary Louise Brittenham, whom he married in 1947 in Cheney, Kan. , died in 1971. He married Dorthea J. (Dottie) Burkhardt Baguhn on Feb. 12, 1972, in Wausau, Wisc. In 1998, they moved to Kingfisher to care for her mother. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and a sister, Dorothy Wills. He is survived by a brother, G.B. Miller, and his wife, Peggy, of Edmond, Okla.
Also surviving are children Catherine Miller Reeverts and her husband, Carl, of Washington, D.C., Glenn A. Miller of Kingfisher, Ronald Miller and his wife, Henrietta, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rebecca Wilber and her husband, Todd, and Scott Baguhn, all of West Chester, Ohio, and Elizabeth Walsh and her husband, Steve, of Waldo, Wisc.; and grandchildren Kevin Reeverts of Minneapolis, Carl D.
