Joseph Mehak, 98, of 2015 Calumet Drive, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at home. Mr. Mehak was born November 12, 1911. He was the son of Joseph Sr. and Mary (Sebanz) Mehak, whom emigrated from Slovenia to Sheboygan in the early 1900’s.
Joe graduated from Sheboygan Vocational School. He served in the Merchant Marines for over 3 years during WWII. He was a firefighter for the Sheboygan Fire Department until his retirement in January of 1968. On August 5, 1961, he married Joan Oostdyk of Oostburg. Joe and Joan enjoyed an annual trip to Canada for fishing and hunting. Here he shot his first moose. Joan passed away in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Adolph and two sisters, Josephine and Marie. Joe is survived by seven nieces.
Joe was an avid reader and could always be found in the afternoon at Mead Public Library. He was self taught in six languages and was a frequent world traveler. He traveled to Mexico and most Central and South American countries. Joe drove from Sheboygan to the end of the road at the tip of South America. He also visited all major D-Day sites in Europe and North Africa. He made several visits to relatives in Slovenia. He also traveled to China and Antarctica. Joe always had an interesting story to relate about his foreign travels.
As an avid biker, Joe rode his bicycle daily until age 94, putting on more that 100,000 miles. Swimming and golfing were other activities he enjoyed and participated in until late in his life. Joe was a longtime member of the YMCA and Riverdale Golf Club.
In accordance with Joseph’s wishes, no funeral services will be held.
